They might not be a musical pair you'd expect, but classically trained pianist Chilly Gonzales and electric rock goddess Peaches have released a number of successful songs together. Look no further than "Red Leather" for evidence of this. Both Canadian-born musicians are the subject of Red Bull Music Academy’s new animated series, The Junction, where the two recording artists narrate the first time they met and how they eventually helped pull each other out of their respective musical quagmires.
Oscar-nominated animator and director Patrick Doyon builds adorable illustrations for Gonzales and Peaches, as each describes their drastically different musical upbringing. Peaches idealized a pure rock band sound which certainly did not include a keyboard, while Gonzales was coming from completely different area of music, one of jazz fusion, “Brainy Music,” as he refers to it in the video.
The two eventually met through mutual friends at a basement jam session where they got high and “just started to like, yell things and sing things at each other,” according to Peaches. During the session, the band played a game of musical chairs with their instruments. Peaches jumped on the keyboard, Gonzales on the drums, and around they went. The latter describes the moment he heard Peaches play guitar in that basement and how it allowed him to cross over to the “other side, where music is a more naturalistic, emotional release.” He says the experience eventually taught him to focus on fun first, and success later.
