For his direction on The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro nabbed the coveted Academy Award for Best Director.

This year's Best Director Oscar competition was slammed with big-name talent, including Greta Gerwig, Jordan Peele, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Christopher Nolan. Yet, as expected, del Toro took home the gold. We thought Nolan should have won for the incredible directing feat that was Dunkirk, but figured the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would settle on The Shape of Water director.

Del Toro succeeds Damien Chazelle, who took home the Oscar in 2017 for La La Land.
