What is this even about? Who knows! Who cares!

Here it is, everyone. The first trailer for Christopher Nolan's mysterious new movie, Tenet, dropped Thursday morning and it looks absolutely fantastic—even though we still have no idea what the thing is actually about. Just watch:

Nolan recently called Tenet his "most ambitious film," which is saying a lot from a guy who built an entire IMAX camera into the body of a WWII fighter plane for his last movie. The film has been sold as an espionage thriller, but the trailer positions it as something closer to Inception than a straight-ahead spy movie.

"We’re jumping off from the point of view of an espionage film, but we’re going to a number of different places," Nolan told Entertainment Weekly. "We’re crossing a few different genres in a hopefully exciting and fresh way." Who knows what, exactly, those genres are, but it definitely feels like Tenet has some sci-fi stuff going on, right? Plus, there's all that talk about the afterlife, and that car crash fully reversed, and, wait, those boats are sailing backwards, too, and the fact that the title is a palindrome feels like a clue, and… uh, whatever, who cares. It's the new Christopher Nolan movie! What more do you need?

Tenet stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, among others. It's due out July 17, 2020. Until then, give the trailer a watch above and unsuccessfully try to learn even one plot point from the entire two-minute runtime.
