If Albert Demuth "Finally Found A Job," Then Why Is His Video So Haunting and Dark?

The Cottaging member breaks out on the solo tip with a new video from his LP, out now.

Listening to Albert Demuth’s “Finally Found a Job,” it’s not surprising that the other members of his band Cottaging are in The Ukiah Drag. This haunting ode is right in line with The Drag, whose frontman ZZ encouraged Demuth to dig as deep as he could for the songs on his debut self-titled album.

“When I was writing the majority of the songs on this album, one of the only consistencies in my life was sleeping under a pile of clothes next to an acoustic guitar. I didn't think I was very good at much aside from falling asleep on that pile with all my clothes on and the lights on. I turned that into a career through song. It doesn't pay well,” says Demuth.

Demuth has made the financially instable jump from nine to fiver (during his time working for the video game company that made Rock Band, he was able to get his old band Libyans featured on the game) to full time rocker. “Finally Found a Job” is the musical appraisal of that life choice; it doesn’t sound pretty, but there is a tone of satisfaction.

In the video, shot on 16mm by Charles David Goodrich and edited by Demuth, the single swinging light bulb, wide shots of strolling through a cemetery, and Demuth’s unshaved, grizzled face match the lonely mood of the song. “If I disappeared it would be several weeks before people noticed,” he says.

“Until tonight I was the light
Staring down as dreams go by
Bearing down on thoughts that rise
Until tonight I was the light,” he sings.
