Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of ‘Smash’ by Watching The Offspring’s Incredibly Awkward TRL Appearance

The band held a contest on the show back in 2000. It did not go well.

The Offspring’s 1994 album Smash album was released 20 years ago today. The album broke out like crazy, selling 20 million copies and providing enough income to keep a steady stream of various drugs flowing through the Epitaph offices for years to come. Today, there’s an interesting divide over Smash. Some will list it as being a hugely influential 90s punk record. Others will write it off as too juvenile, a Punk Rock for Dummies, if you will. And then there are some people who have no idea what the fuck it is.

Take this episode of TRL from 2000, for example. The band made an appearance on the show, putting up a million dollars to the most knowledgeable Offspring superfan. The problem was, even their diehard fans didn’t seem to know anything about them. Watch this horribly awkward clip where even the most basic questions about the band are met with total silence. Question after question goes by before Carson Daly stops just short of asking “What letter does ‘Offspring’ start with?… Or just name a letter in the word ‘Offspring.’ …Or just name any letter of the alphabet… any letter at all. The first person whose heart beats next wins. SAY SOMETHING, YOU STUPID DUMB SHIT GODDAMN MOTHERFUCKERS!”

Bonus video of people not knowing who the fuck the Offspring is: Check out this video of Pauly Shore talking about the Offspring and the Hilton sisters having no idea what he’s talking about.

And while we’re throwing out Offspring videos, let us never forget the band’s infamous appearance in

Idle Hands

where Dexter Holland gets scalped.
