James Franco Goes Full Tommy Wiseau in the New 'Disaster Artist' Trailer

The first full trailer for The Disaster Artist, James Franco's insane new movie about the making of an even more insane movie, dropped Tuesday—and it looks like Franco's method acting and all-salad diet paid off.

The film is a fictional, behind-the-scenes look at the creation and production of Tommy Wiseau's 2003 garbage masterpiece, The Room. Wiseau's movie is so gloriously awful that it has created the kind of fervent midnight screening culture previously reserved for Rocky Horror Picture Show, birthed entire dating sites, and apparently inspired Franco to direct and star in a biopic about it.

"The Room is not the worst movie," Franco told Vanity Fair last weekend. "It is the best worst movie. I think that is an important distinction. There are thousands upon thousands of movies that people never watch, and people are still watching this movie."

The Disaster Artist is based on a biography by The Room producer and co-star Greg Sestero about making the movie, with Franco playing the long-haired, preternaturally muscular Wiseau and his brother Dave Franco as Sestero. Back in July, we got to see Franco become Wiseau while recreating that "Oh hi, Marc," scene in the first teaser trailer. But now we have a wider look at the film and its cast, which is rounded out by Alison Brie and Bryan Cranston, among others. There's also a pitch-perfect "You're tearing me apart, Lisa," in there for good measure.

The Disaster Artist started immediately pulling in Oscar buzz after its premiere at SXSW, and Vulture said the film is destined to "join Tim Burton's Ed Wood in the ranks of great movies about terrible movies." It recently debuted at TIFF to similar adulation—and from the looks of this trailer, the hype is warranted.
