Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of the British Billboard charts, Bloc Party resurrected itself out of its supposed hiatus last Tuesday to drop a five-track EP called The Nextwave Sessions. "Ratchet," the band's new single, came out in June—a week after Miley Cyrus' now-infamous "We Can't Stop" video. I guess everybody's trying to take a bite out of cool rap slang these days (even the guitar dudes).Then Glasgow's thizzy future beats master Rustie stepped in with a remix, erasing lyrics about "smoking on that home roll" and subbing in a thick arrangement of wonky drums, pip-squeaks, and rubberband beats. And now we've got the music video to go with it, with visuals by Jerome LOL of Body High and the now-defunct LOL Boys. Jerome remixes Bloc Party's original "Ratchet" video—feeding the images through a psychedelic shredder with his signature web 1.0 lo-fi fuzz. Now there's a hot mess.
