Anthony Weiner Is Going to Prison for Sexting a 15-Year-Old

On Monday, a New York court sentenced former congressman Anthony Weiner to 21 months in prison for sexting a 15-year-old girl, the New York Post reports.

"This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment," Manhattan federal judge Denise Cote said, sentencing Weiner to almost two years in prison for transferring obscene material to a minor—a charge that could have landed him up to ten years in lock-up.

The 53-year-old will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison time, pay a $10,000 fine, and take part in a sex offender outpatient treatment program, according to the Post. According to CNN, Weiner will also have to register as a sex offender once he's out of prison.

Weiner's underaged sexting scandal broke last year when the unnamed minor spoke out about her months-long online relationship with the disgraced New York politician, sharing screenshots of their conversations. She said she initially hit up Weiner through his Twitter DMs in early 2016, and the pair dirty-texted on various social media platforms for the next few months.

"He had some rape fantasies," the girl told the Daily Mail in September 2016. "It would just be him showing up at my house when my dad was out of town. And just start undressing me, being forceful, asking me if I want to be dominated, strange questions."

According to prosecutors, Weiner also had the 15-year-old "engage in sexually explicit conduct via Skype and Snapchat, where her body was on display, and where she was asked to sexually perform for him," CNN reports.

The Special Victims Unit began investigating following the story's release. In May, Weiner pleaded guilty to the sexting charge. His wife, former Clinton adviser Huma Abedin, filed for divorce the same day.

"This crime was my rock bottom," Weiner reportedly said in court, before crying as the sentence was read. "I have no excuse… I victimized a young person who deserved better."

Weiner will begin his sentence on November 6. According to the Post, his lawyer has requested that he be incarcerated at a low-security prison near the New York area.
