Red Fang draws from an unusually large well of pop culture knowledge, from 80s sci-fi to iconic puzzle games. Their latest Only Ghosts video (it might as well be a visual album at this point) might be their pinnacle of geekiness. Animated by Balázs Gróf (who also did several goofy videos for death metal pioneers Obituary), the clip tells the story of a UFO-seeking Yeti who spends an entire night at a club berating Red Fang themselves to play their greatest hits. This, despite the poor guys pulling out classic fire like Hüsker Dü's Zen Arcade and Genesis' Selling England by the Pound. You can't please everyone.Eventually, a DJ gets sent flying into orbit by a dragon-lady (long story) and is inspected by the aliens he's picked up by, with the encounter resulting in everyone's music tastes being substantially expanded by the audio delights of Can. It's High Fidelity meets X-Files, basically, and everyone is happy. It begs the question, though: why would you pull out prog rock deep cuts in the club, anyway? Not that I'm complaining, but you know. Watch the "Not for You" video above.Phil is on Twitter.
