With His New EP on Safer at Night, Curses Proves He's Found a New Home in Berlin

Listen to 'God In the Dust'—three tracks of stripped-down house and techno inspired by Berlin's nocturnal soundscapes.

When New York City's moonlight marauder Curses (Luca Venezia) ditched his signature black cowboy hat and hightailed over the pond to a new life in Berlin, we had a feeling the techno mecca would have a sizable influence on his spooky yet slinky sound. Luckily, we were right.

For Safer At Night's landmark 20th release, the label founder is in the driver's seat with what he calls his most personal EP to date. God In The Dust is three tracks of sparsely composed four-on-the-floor—nocturnal soundscapes of the city he now calls home. "Since moving to Berlin, I've been inspired by the stripped back and minimal sounds of the house and techno here. Less is more," Venezia tells us over email.

According to the producer, the EP's A-side "God In The Dust" was actually recorded as one track with the ambient-leaning "Saren Highs" during a spontaneous live session. Eventually, the two entries were cut into separate tracks that find themselves on either side of "All I Knew," a shimmering house groover that's a perfect interlude to the two more dimly-lit productions.

With his latest EP, as well as frequent Berlin visits from his label-mates Total Fitness and Cranks, Venezia hopes to use his new home's influence to evolve Safer At Night into a New York/Berlin-based label. If the EP streaming below is any indication, we can't wait to hear the result of their new cross-Atlantic vibe.
