Day One's "Moonburn" is an Ominous Galactic Sojourn

Cover your eyes and pray you outrun that exploding sun.

Two years have gone by since the world last heard from UK producer Jack Coward, a.k.a. Day One, when he was releasing on Canada's Monstercat Records. Apparently he's been lost in space—at least that's the concept behind his upcoming EP Serenity, due out on SectionZ Records on October 16.

The album tells the story of a lone pilot as he traverses the galaxy, looking upon its wonders. Today's premiere, "Moonburn," is an upbeat, if not disconcerting, part of that sojourn. The track, Day One says, "Represents exploration…I can imagine watching a supernova or flying through wormholes or around black holes to the experimental vibe in this one."

Don't be fooled by its description, though, "Moonburn" isn't ambient or ethereal. It's beat-driven dance music that drops with bassy synths, hitting in rapid succession. There's a tension in the track that explodes with mounting energy, highlighted by the minimal, but expertly utilized, male vocals that accentuate the song's crescendos.

The album may be called, Serenity, but this track is anything but. "Moonburn" is the song that's playing when you're covering your eyes praying you outrun an exploding sun.
