K-Rec Would Like "Your Thoughts" on His Head-Spinning Hip-Hop

Listen to the Vancouverite's gorgeous new EP of glitchy, Japan-inspired soul.

Vancouver DJ/producer K-Rec is among the many beatmakers to tap into the well of post-Donuts soul samples and side-chained kicks. However, rather than let his compositions be empty loops, he fills them with vocalists and makes them into genuine, affecting songs on his new EP Your Thoughts?. Lead single "Synchronicity" is wah-wah'ed electro-funk featuring Chicago spitter Serengeti, but the following "Strathcona" has angelic, chopped-up strings supporting Francesca Belcourt's vocals as she herself becomes part of the beat. Inventive production like that is all over the EP.

"I made Your Thoughts? during a tumultuous time in my life, as a way to process and document what I was going through," K-Rec told Noisey, "I lost some friends, got out of a long term relationship, and found myself torn between two countries—Canada and Japan. Your Thoughts? is my attempt to translate that confusion into music; and I was fortunate enough to have the help of some of my best friends and favourite artists in the process."
