Preview the Biopic About Wonder Woman's Kinky, Polyamorous Creator

After Wonder Woman broke the box office and sparked a dialogue about sexism and representation in Hollywood, a new film is delving into the revolutionary origin story behind the first major female comic-book hero.

On Monday, Annapurna Pictures aired the first trailer for Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, which explores the sex-positive and polyamorous roots behind the comic, Vulture reports. Based on a true story, the film traces Diana Prince's creation back to three people: Professor William Moulton Marston, his wife Elizabeth, and his muse Olive Byrne. After studying under Marston at Tufts University, Byrne enters into a romantic relationship with the couple. Alongside Elizabeth, Olive served as inspiration for the heroine Marston would go on to create in 1941.

The trio kept their relationship a secret—this was the 1940s—and guarded it just as closely their interest in bondage, kink, and sex-positivity, i09 reports. Professor Marston chronicles how their shared ideas about sex, power, gender roles, and the early feminist movement fed into the creation of Wonder Woman and manifested in the superhero's storylines. All that not-so-subtle messaging, as the trailer makes clear, didn't come without some serious backlash.

The Girl on the Train's Luke Evans stars in the film as the eponymous professor, alongside Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3) as his wife, and Bella Heathcote (The Neon Demon) as Byrne. Transparent creator Jill Soloway produced the film, and Angela Robinson—who's written for The L Word and True Blood—directed.
