In his continued efforts to support the nightlife community in London, mayor Sadiq Khan has appointed lawyer Philip Kolvin QC to chair of the revamped Night Time Commission. Kolvin will work alongside recently-appointed night czar Amy Lamé.Kolvin is the head of Cornerstone Barristers and on the board of the Night Time Industries Association. Kolvin is also a licensing expert who served on behalf of fabric during their appeal hearing this fall.Fabric was recently allowed to reopen after the famed nightclub lost its license earlier in the year following the deaths of two teenagers. Kolvin secured an agreement between the club and Islington Council, who stripped the club of its license. The agreement includes 32 new conditions to help prevent drug abuse."Working alongside my newly-appointed night czar Amy Lamé, Philip's expert knowledge in the field of licensing, regulation and policy will be crucial in ensuring that our live music venues and nightclubs are protected from closure and that they are recognised as a distinctive part of our cultural heritage," Khan told City A.M.In his new position with the Night Time Commission, Kolvin will work with Lamé to help transform London into a "24-hour city," reports City A.M. Kelvin's new position begins January 9."As the capital grows, we must plan for a growing night-time economy for the whole of Greater London – something that can only be achieved through proper partnerships with stakeholders, strategic planning, and investment in infrastructure," Kolvin said to City A.M.In May, we reported on how mayors like Khan help nourish their cities' nightlife.
