Jerry Seinfeld Revisits All His Old Jokes in a New Netflix Special

Back in the 70s, Jerry Seinfeld was just a young, struggling comic scribbling jokes on legal pads and workshopping them on small stages across New York City, praying that his punchlines would land. Now, years after the Seinfeld star became a household name, he's going back to his roots and reviving some of the first jokes he ever wrote for a new Netflix special.

The streaming service announced Tuesday it'll be dropping Jerry Before Seinfeld—the first of the comedian's two upcoming stand-up specials—on September 19, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The show, which was filmed at the Comic Strip—a New York City club that helped launch Seinfeld's career—focuses on his early work, pairing some of his old jokes with shots of his extensive notes, as well as footage from his childhood.

That decision makes for a pretty unique look into Seinfeld's creative process—it's wild, for instance, to see how he delivers the first joke he ever wrote more than 40 years after penning it:

Netflix also dropped the comedian's bits on how sad it is to be a sock, the questionable way his father moved furniture, and this particular gem, where Seinfeld gives the audience the finger:

Seinfeld's Netflix deal will also bring 24 new episodes of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee to the streaming service, including all the old installments that, for now, are housed on Crackle. The new episodes are slated to move to Netflix sometime in late 2017.
