Due to his scene-defining collaborations with Young Thug and Future, going so far as to executive produce the latter's recent What A Time To Be Alive mixtape with Drake, Atlanta's Metro Boomin holds a special place among the city's hefty roster of innovating producers. Even with a sound that's to a certain degree, a formula—808 underpinning, skittering hi-hats, familiar clap and snare patterns—Metro Boomin is able to do it interestingly, and with amazing consistency.
That's why the above video is such a treat, as it shows him developing the drum programming of a track in real time, providing a sense of how he makes decisions when he's producing for the world's biggest rappers. We have Razer to think for the video, who after establishing themselves with video game software, have moved into the music arena with the intent to produce music hardware and tutorials from well-known producers like Deadmau5 and Carnage.
Making their Metro Boomin partnership even sweeter for the rest of us, Razer is giving away a custom sample pack from him for free. Download it here.
