Avicii Cancels All Future Concerts Citing Health Issues Amid Rumors of Bigger Problems

You will not be seeing Avicii on a stage near you anytime soon. The Swedish superstar (real name: Tim Bergling) has indefinitely cancelled all of his scheduled concerts due to health issues, and representatives have confirmed that he will not be embarking on any promotional tours or events anytime in the near future.

Bergling has come off a string of high-profile shows this summer, with stops at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, Electric Daisy Carnival UK, and a summer residency at Ushuaia Ibiza. He looked especially jolly during his headlining set at Belgium's Tomorrowland back in July, with few public signs of his health struggles.

Sadly, this is not the first time that Bergling has been forced to put his career on hold. Back in March, he had to cancel two headlining sets in Miami—at the 2014 Ultra Music Festival, and his own Avicii-themed hotel at the SLS South Beach. His recovery from those surgeries also prompted him to cancel all of his Las Vegas residencies for the month of April.

This time around, Bergling will be a no-show at TomorrowWorld in Atlanta later this month, his residencies at XS and Encore Beach Club at Wynn Las Vegas, and a scheduled tour of Asia later this year. According to a press release from At Night Management, he will be "taking a break at home in Stockholm so he can regain his strength and physical well-being before the release of a new album project next year."

Even before his gallbladder and appendix surgeries, rumors have been swirling for over a year about Bergling's struggles with alcohol addiction. He has admitted in several interviews that heavy drinking landed him in the hospital with acute pancreatitis in late 2012. "You are traveling around, you live in a suitcase, you get to this place, there's free alcohol everywhere—it's sort of weird if you don't drink," he told Jessica Pressler in an infamous GQ interview back in April of 2013. "I just got into a habit, because you rely on that encouragement and self-confidence you get from alcohol, and then you get dependent on it."

Substance addiction and abuse has long been an issue for artists within the dance music scene, though for a variety of reasons (some economical, some personal) it has rarely been discussed. In 2013, Erick Morillo admitted to a stay at a rehab facility to treat his addiction issues. Should Avicii be suffering from alcohol issues he would be not be the first—nor would he be alone. Thankfully, he has both the resources and support system to recover quickly—let's hope this recent health scare will also be the last.
