The FBI raided the office of President Donald Trump’s longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, on Monday, the New York Times reports. Agents seized records on several subjects, including some that reportedly dealt with payments Cohen made to porn star Stormy Daniels, who’s said she had an affair with Trump.

The raid was initiated after a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating the Trump campaign’s possible ties to Russian meddling in the 2016 election. However, it does not appear to be part of his investigation and instead likely arose after Mueller found information on Cohen and tipped off New York prosecutors, the Times reports.

In a statement, Cohen’s lawyer Stephen Ryan said, "Today the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York executed a series of search warrants and seized the privileged communications between my client, Michael Cohen, and his clients. I have been advised by federal prosecutors that the New York action is, in part, a referral by the Office of Special Counsel, Robert Mueller."

Ryan also said that Cohen has cooperated completely with all government agencies.

"The decision by the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York to conduct their investigation using search warrants is completely inappropriate and unnecessary,” he added.

Trump has denied the affair and any knowledge of Cohen’s payments to Daniels. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told CNBC that the White House has no comment on the raid.
