A man died on Tuesday night after falling down a garbage chute, CTV News reports. Paramedics responded to an emergency call at the scene just after 10 PM Tuesday. Reports currently claim the man, who is currently reported to be in his 30s, fell nine floors down the chute.

Police have called the garbage chute-related death, which occurred in a residential building on Erskine Avenue at Eglinton Avenue East and Mount Pleasant Road, “suspicious.”

"We're still investigating, but we're treating it as a suspicious death," Acting Staff Sergeant Chazz Stern told CBC Wednesday.

The man was found without vital signs in a “confined” area of the garbage disposal system before where trash is compacted. Removing his body proved complicated for emergency responders.

"They disassembled what needed to be taken apart,” Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg told CBC. “And ultimately, they were able to access the patient. Then from there, it becomes the responsibility of police and paramedics."

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the man’s death is not known at this time. We will update this story as more information is released.
