Though Drake appeared in a retro-styled music video and took the opportunity to look like a knowing dweeb, another Torontonian has taken that aesthetic to actually say something of note. Just John's "NOISE" was already the highlight off last year's Black Beret EP, and its new video illuminates the spirit of protest that powers the irresistibly silky dancefloor jam.Opening with the disclaimer that three noise complaints were indeed received during its filming, the clip takes place at a disco-lit party. Otis Redding LPs and Black Panther berets call back to the late 60s, subtly tracing the lineage from the funked-out protest songs of the era to the modern, futuristic funk of "NOISE" itself, which addresses Toronto's DIY venue crisis.
