Your 2014 Guide to Movement Detroit’s Top After Parties

A bunch of parties to get FOMO about if you’re not coming to Movement this year.

Detroit will be jammed with partygoers young and old as the world famous, 15th annual Movement Electronic Music Festival kicks off next weekend. After the sun goes down and the festival sleeps for the night, there is a huge selection of different after parties one can attend. The best part about Detroit after parties—not only is the vibe like none other because you're in the birthplace of techno, but the price cannot be beaten. From labels out of town to hometown Detroit heroes, one must be careful about selection though. Here are our picks for the top after parties for Movement Electronic Music Festival 2014.

Friday May 23, 2014: the pre-party and pre-Movement preparation (for your mind and soul).

1. Ghostly: 15 Detroit

Who: Adult. (live), Matthew Dear, Shigeto (live), Osborne (live debut), JTC, Heathered Pearls, Mike Servito
Where: St. Andrews Hall
Why: Ghostly International celebrates 15 years of great tunes with live sets by Adult., Shigeto, and Osborne's debut. DJ sets by Matthew Dear, JTC, Heathered Pearls, and Mike Servito.

2. Resident Advisor Official Movement Opening Party with DJ Harvey

Who: DJ Harvey
Where: Bleu
Why: Resident Advisor is hosting a DJ Harvey Movement pre party and he's the only DJ on the line-up playing from 9 PM to 2 AM, no openers no bullshit. Straight fire disco—for $10.

3. The Smart Bar/TV Lounge Movement Opening Party & BBQ with Daniel Bell, Floating Points at TV Lounge

Who: Daniel Bell, Floating Points, TV Lounge residents Aran Daniels & Mr Joshooa, and Smartbar residents Justin Long, Rahaan, The Black Madonna, Olin
Where: TV Lounge
Why: Because if anyone knows how to take you on a musical journey its Floating Points. Props to RP for this track:

Saturday:

1. RBMA Presents Soul Claps House of Efunk

Who: Soul Clap, Heidi, Justin Martin, DJ Three vs. Doc Martin, Stacey Pullen, Andres, Scott Grooves, Egyptian Lover (DJ set), Pillowtalk (DJ set), Tanner Ross, Nick Monaco (live), Till von Sein, FSQ, Dan Bain, Sa'd "the Hour Child" Ali
Where: TV Lounge
Why: Tickets are sold out but there will be more at the door—if you are the slightest bit interested in this party I would highly recommend checking it out, considering the lineup is quite interesting from Heidi to Egyptian Lover and goes for TWELVE hours.

2. CLR Detroit 2014: Official Movement After Party

Who: Chris Liebing, Marcel Dettman, Radio Slave, Function
Where: Bleu
Why: This is the third year of CLR in Detroit and between Chris Liebing, Marcel Dettman, Radio Slave, and Function this might be the perfect techno storm.

3. Paradigm Underground presents Saturday – Tale of Us, Damian Lazarus

Who: Tale of Us, Damian Lazarus, Max Jacobson, Nick Bassett, Mantas Steles
Where: Leland City Club
Why: Possibly one of the coolest venues in Detroit—if you go to any party at City Club for Movement, it needs to be this one. Go get chicken fingers in the diner downstairs after and thank me later.

4. Get Thoughtless: Detroit 2014

Who: Alixander III, Butane, Noah Pred, Rennie Foster, Stone Owl, Jeremy Poling, SuperDre, Gabi, Asher Perkins, Dru Ruiz, ADMN, more to be announced.
Where: Northern Lights Lounge
Why: Show some love to Canada's own Alixander III who will be giving the crowd a set, which is a transcendental amino acid for the heart, mind and muscles. With a huge lineup of talent from around the globe and more acts to be announced in coming days, this patio and BBQ after party should definitely be on your hit list. Oh, we're also giving away free tickets to this party as well.

Sunday:

1. Mixmag Official Movement After Party with Marco Carola

Who: Marco Carola
Where: Bleu
Why: Marco Carola doing what he does best and bringing the basslines while taking you on a journey through a five-hour set.

2. OK, Cool with Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers, Craig Richards, J Phlip, Thugfucker, Eddie C

Who: Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers, Craig Richards, J Phlip, Thugfucker, Eddie C, Rick Wade, New Agenda, Dax Lee, Arnarko, Peter Blick
Where: TV Lounge
Why: Second installment of OK, COOL, with Seth Troxler's dance moves and the Martinez Brothers grooves. It's a no brainer. Ok? Cool.

3. Interface 47 – Scene 22 – Official Movement After Party

Who: Regis, Oscar Mulero, CELL INJECTION (Drumcell + Audio Injection), Dustin Zahn, Kyle Geiger, PINION, John Templeton, Jay Zoney & JGarrett, Corbin Davis, Joel Morgan, Centrific, Dean Paul and much more to be announced.
Where: The Works
Why: Third annual Movement after party that will feed your dark techno needs for this night.

Monday:

1. Antholoy: An Official Movement After Party

Who: Voices from the Lake (extended live DJ set, aka Donato Dozzy & Neel), Clay Wilson (live), Bryan Kasenic, Mike Servito, Anthony Shake Shakir, Pittsburgh Track Authority, Humanaut (Aaron Clark vs. Relative Q), Plastic Love (Bas vs. Jimmy Maheras) Martin Fazekas, Miranda Castilllo aka Whipnotiq
Where: The Works
Why: Easily one of the most stacked lineups of talent for the after party round-up.

2. As You Like It & Safe: Closer

Who: Bicep, Move D, Daniel Avery, Marcellus Pittman, Jason Kendig, Sassmouth, Mossmoss, Shady P, Diego, Andrew Kelley and a special unannounced guest.
Where: TV Lounge
Why: Of the three after parties listed here, it's sure to be a closing party that will be something special. If you miss Daniel Avery at the festival you can make up for that here, as he is one of the most relevant names in dance music as of late.

3. RBMA Official Movement Closing Party: Phone Home

Who: Maceo Plex presents Dream, Don't Sleep, Maceo Plez B2B Michael Mayer, Odd Parents, Ataxia, Deadbeat, Loco Dice, Stacey Pullen, DJ Sneak, Martin Buttrich
Where: St. Andrew's Hall
Why: The official Movement closing party hosted by Red Bull Music Academy will be a total 10 out of 10 simply because of this rare b2b with Maceo Plez and Michael Mayer. Not to mention the talent in the other rooms as well.

Extra Credit:

The Annual Old Miami

Who: The line-up is usually announced via Twitter, but you can check out last years lineup here.
Where: The Old Miami
Why: Seth Troxler often takes your money at the door. This is a special morning BBQ and dance party in the backyard of a special landmark in Detroit.
