Our Favourite Canadian Tracks of the Week Include a Drake/Weeknd Mashup, Last Lizard, and More

Group of Seven is THUMP Canada's weekly roundup of the best electronic tracks that you may have missed, whether it be ambient, lo-fi house, techno, etc. From British Columbia to Nova Scotia, here's the seven new Canadian releases that we can't get enough of lately.

Vancouver's Big Zen serves up an ominous techno cut that moves between break loops, sinister ambience, and acid-tinged synths. Don't be fooled by the lounge foley that opens up the track—it quickly moves into a much darker place, and knows exactly how to grip you.

A hypnotic highlight from Cloudface's new album Variations—which sees Vancouver producer David Reynolds exploring the Korg Mono/Poly Synthesizer—"Unhex" meditatively focuses on eerie textures that chill the spine.

Montreal-based musician Kyle Bobby Dunn uses his guitar to forge an ambient and melancholic soundscape on "Her Ghost Wore Tennis Shoes (Longue version de Crémazie)." Recorded at Van Horne Septic Tank Services in Quebec, the track is a vulnerable lullaby that leaves you feeling wistfully nostalgic.

Best known for his work as Dirty Beaches, Last Lizard is the alias of globe-trotting Taiwanese-Canadian musician Alex Zhang Hungtai. Following last year's excellent Ascetic House tape Knave of Hearts, he returns with "Dérive," a foreboding 11-minute composition which evolves from interstellar ambience to an orchestra of dystopian synths.

After recently signing to HW&W, Toronto producer Shagabond offers up the kaleidoscopic "Citrus Shampoo." As the track's zest puts a spring in your step, you'll quickly see why its quirky name couldn't be any more fitting.

Described as a "wee lil edit for easter weekend," Vancouver's Unknown Mobile (aka Levi Bruce) takes on French musician Philippe Saisse's 1998 track "Valerian" with winning results. Bold and upfront, the song's spry bass hook dons the original with a wicked groove, adding shuffling hats to its New Age pads.

Played by Oliver El-Khatib on this weekend's episode of OVO Sound Radio, this mashup credited to one Young Kippur is pretty self-explanatory, combining the Weeknd's Tears for Fears-sampling "Secrets" and Drake's inescapable "Passionfruit." It's since disappeared from SoundCloud, but you can listen to it here.
