This collaboration between Lil Yachty and Carly Rae Jepsen is, yes, a little corny. It is a remake of Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock's 1998 track "It Takes Two," it was produced by Mike Will Made-It, and so far there are only 30 seconds of it. It was recorded for a Target commercial that's going to air in a three-minute slot during this Sunday's Grammys. That commercial was directed by Roman Coppola. The choreography for that commercial was put together by La La Land's Mandy Moore. Are you getting all this? Good.
Will the track become more or less corny when Carly Rae Jepsen adds her rap verse to it? Because, according to this Entertainment Weekly interview with Jepsen, which you should read in full, Carly Rae Jepsen has a rap verse to add to it.
EW: How was it flexing your hip-hop muscles?
Jepsen: [Laughs] You get some strange pitches in your lifetime, and this was definitely one of them. I got a late-night phone call from my A&R person, who was like, "We're missing one verse, and they're wondering if you wouldn't mind writing a rap and coming in and recording it tonight?" I was like, "Uh, you guys realize I don't rap, right? That sounds crazy." It was one of the most intimidating moments of my career being in the room with Mike Will and Yachty and sixteen other friends of theirs just partying. They're like, "Alright, go perform your first-ever rap in front of actual professional rappers!" There's nothing more terrifying than that. But they were really helpful.
Apparently, the filming of the commercial involved Yachty and Jepsen giggling uncontrollably, fucking around with a shopping cart, while Roman Coppola barked instructions at them. "For some reason, we did about 20 takes of it," Jepsen said. "We were just in fits of giggles because Yachty was in his element. He could honestly be a comedian on top of everything."
Jepsen also offered an update on the follow-up to 2015's glorious EMOTION, saying she's taking cues from Donna Summer's disco: "That would be the disco inspiration that's leading the pack at the moment. That said, some of the songs that have surprised me have not been in the disco realm as much. I can't really put my finger on what it is, but that's exciting too. There's so much music out there right now and so much quality stuff, so I'm trying to find out what I have to offer that's different."
So, yes, this cover is kinda corny. But if that's the price that we must pay for an update on Jepsen's new record, the thought of her dropping bars with the support of Mike Will and Yachty, and this photograph, then we're getting a bargain.
