One of the favorites to win the 3000m steeplechase, Ethiopia's Etenesh Diro, had to finish the last half mile of her heat without a shoe on her right foot. Diro, who is ranked No. 4 in the world and came in fifth in the event in London, got tangled up with a pack of runners and crashed to the ground. In the process her shoe came loose and after struggling to get it back on and secured, she simply ripped it off and started running the race again with just a sock on her foot. At some point she took that off, too, probably because it got all soggy in the water portion of the event.

The time wasted in the fall and subsequent shoe issue dropped Diro out of contention in the race and she eventually finished in seventh place, seemingly out of the final. However, the Ethiopian team, as well as the Irish and Jamaican teams, appealed the outcome and the Jury of Appeal reviewed the footage and allowed Diro, Louise Treacy (Ireland), and Aisha Praught (Jamaica) to advance to the final.
