Calvin Harris Was the Only Electronic Musician to Win at the VMAs

He took home awards for his collaborations with Rihanna and Disciples, respectively.

EDM golden boy Calvin Harris was the lone dance music producer to take home a moon man statue at the 2016 MTV VMAs, which took place Sunday evening at New York City's Madison Square Garden. The Scottish artist came away with two awards in total, including Best Male Video for "This Is What You Came For" featuring Rihanna, and Best Electronic Video for his collaboration with London trio Disciples, "How Deep Is Your Love." Both clips were directed by English director Emil Nava.

In his acceptance speech for "TIWYCF," Harris thanked Rihanna "from this bottom of [his] heart" but made no mention of Taylor Swift, his former girlfriend who wrote the song under the (objectively weird) pseudonym Nils Sjoberg. It was a secret that Swift had done so until one of her representatives told People magazine about it in July, which led Harris to send out a string of tweets saying it was "hurtful" that Swift and her team "would go so far out of their way to try and make ME [Harris] look bad at this stage."The couple broke up in June after 15 months together.

Harris won out against the likes of Afrojack, The Chainsmokers, and Mike Posner in the only category specifically geared toward electronic music. The only other electronic-leaning artists to be nominated outside of that category, including the non-televised "Professional" categories, were the aforementioned Chainsmokers, Major Lazer, FKA Twigs, and Alesso.

In 2015, a total of three electronic-leaning artists took home awards: Flying Lotus, for his collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, and Skrillex and Diplo, for their inimitable work with none other than Mr. Bieber.
