Yet another embarrassing failure of an algorithmic trends widget.

Good morning! Time to log onto Twitter and check the pulse of the nation. Let's see what's going on:

There is no clear reason why these two lovely hashtags are trending on a Thursday morning; a search of the hashtag finds no obvious patient zero, event, or viral tweets that may have led it to show up on the "Trends for You" feed. However, the fact that these terms are trending has caused them to trend more, with any confused people tweeting the hashtags. Several folks believe that, perhaps, this is a cruel #NoNutNovember joke.

In any case, this is yet another example of how algorithmically generated trend feeds on social media can go horribly wrong. Remember when YouTube's top trending video was a Parkland High School shooting "crisis actor" conspiracy?

"These should not have appeared in trends, and the team has taken action," Twitter told Motherboard in an email. The company also directed us to the Trends FAQ page, which says:

We want trends to promote healthy discussions on Twitter. This means that at times, we may prevent certain content from trending. These include trends that:
-- Contain profanity or adult/graphic references.
-- Incite hate on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease.
-- Violate the Twitter Rules

Anyways, enjoy your Thursday.
