Logan Morrison is Salty Gary Sanchez is in the Home Run Derby and He's Not

Over the weekend, the Yankees announced that Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez would participate in the Home Run Derby next Monday. It's a testament to just how insane Judge's first half has been that a guy like Sanchez is basically an afterthought in this competition, since the Yankees catcher had his own Judge-like introduction to the majors last year, hitting 20 home runs in 53 games. His two months in the bigs were so insane that he became a viable candidate for Rookie of the Year, but finished second to Michael Fulmer.

One potential All-Star is not at all happy about this situation, though, and he lashed out at MLB for adding Sanchez to the Derby. Logan Morrison, who is a Final Vote candidate, told the Tampa Bay Times "Gary shouldn't be there." He did say that Sanchez was a "great player," but he also repeated his feelings that he shouldn't be participating and then got a little catty. "I remember when I had 14 home runs,'' Morrison told the Times. "That was a month and a half ago.''

Obviously, Morrison feels like the Yankees catcher stole his spot, and he's pretty salty about it. Morrison is having a great year—he's got 24 HRs, slashing .256/.366/.579 and an OPS+ of 153—and there is absolutely no reason he shouldn't be in the Derby, or a lock for the All-Star Game. Actually, I lied, there is one reason, and Morrison knows it all too well:

People know who Gary Sanchez is because he was a highly touted prospect for the Yankees who turned into a home run machine when he got called up last year. And despite missing about a month, he's been cranking out homers this year too. He's played in nearly 30 fewer games than Morrison and still has 13 home runs. It's hard not to feel for the Rays slugger, but more people will watch the Derby for Gary Sanchez than they would for Morrison. And that's the whole point of the Home Run Derby. MLB wants to showcase its young stars. And because he plays for the Yankees, Sanchez is a bigger star.

Call it unfair, media bias, or blame the Yankees for being annoying about everything, but at the end of the day, Morrison is not in the Derby because no one cares about the Tampa Bay Rays, even though they should because a.) they are right in the thick of it in the AL East, and b.) Morrison is having a great year. They're just not the rejuvenated and ahead-of-schedule contending New York Yankees, and Logan is not #ElGary.
