A large contingent of UK music festival websites are scheduled to shut down on Monday (May 8) for 24 hours as part of a Safer Spaces campaign against sexual assault.

As BBC reports, the campaign is headed by the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) with support from groups including Rape Crisis England & Wales, Girls Against, Safe Gigs For Women, and the White Ribbon Campaign.

More than 25 festivals are on board, including popular longtime weekenders like Bestival, Parklife, and Secret Garden Party. Furthermore, more than 60 AIF members have signed a Charter of Best Practice, which states a commitment to upholding the zero-tolerance policy, providing services to victims of sexual assault, and ensuring staff and volunteers are trained to deal with sexual violence.

"Festivals can be crazy spaces and we're proud that they're places to let off steam but there are limits and rules as there are in general society," Bestival founder and DJ Rob da Bank told BBC. "It's a positive message and not a scary one. Everyone should be able to go to festivals and enjoy them."
