The Nobel Institute’s director confirmed at least two fake nominations have been submitted on behalf of the U.S. president.Trump was nominated both times for “ideology of peace by force.”The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the most prestigious awards on the planet, and it has a highly secretive nomination process. Potential laureates can only be nominated by certain government representatives or an exclusive group of academics.The director of the Nobel Institute said Tuesday that the potentially fraudulent Trump nominations were relayed to police. He also disclosed that another forged nomination was submitted on Trump’s behalf last year. Police believe that the same person is behind both fake nominations."I can say that we have good reason to believe that [the nomination of Mr. Trump] is a fake," Nobel Institute Director Olav Njølstad told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.This year, there are 329 candidates, comprised of 217 people and 112 organizations, up for the award. The winner will be announced in October, and the names of the losing candidates are not disclosed. The prize has been awarded annually since 1901.Past winners of the award include Barack Obama, who received the honor in 2009 for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." Some representatives of the Nobel Institute have since stepped forward to say awarding Obama was a mistake.
