Crate Expectations: Adrian Hour

Yet another DJ devoted to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Adrian Hour.

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?
Adrian Hour: I don't remember exactly what the first song ever was, but I think it was and still is "Thriller," the first original version from the legend Michael Jackson. It reminds me of when I was young and I was totally in love with the video as well.

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
The first two songs I ever mixed together were "Da Funk" from Daft Punk and "Hey Boy Hey Girl" from Chemical Brothers, two tracks I still love! "Da Funk" has a much slower tempo, unlike "Hey Boy Hey Girl." I didn't have decks or CD players with pitch control back then, so it was a very fast mix. I kept trying until I got it right!

What is your worst guilty pleasure song?
Currently, I quite like Duke Dumont's "The Giver." It's not the usual sound I go for, but my girlfriend loves it and I really like this one.

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
I had to do a DJ mix recently about my introduction into the world of electronic and I found a classic from Ricardo Villalobos called "Dexter." After that, I spent the whole summer humming the melody.

Which track of your own do you love the most?
In terms of my released tracks I think it would be "SHE." I'm still dropping it in my sets sometimes and the reactions are always great. I also have a new collaboration with Mark Knight and a very cool vocalist—to be revealed soon! It's a slightly different style from my usual, something quite dark, melodic, and at the same time very catchy. I'm in love with this track.

What track of your own do you hate the most?
[Laughs] What a question! I never really hate anything I've made, but I think it could be an old track I made in 2011 called "Hit The Light." Yeah, actually, I hate it! I think it was the beginning of my career and it made me more meticulous with my work.

What tracks are you most excited to drop in a set?
My new tracks from a forthcoming EP I've been working on with Mark Knight. There are three bombs that I'm sure will destroy the dancefloor! It's due for release in a couple of weeks so you'll be able to hear them pretty soon.

What's your favourite track that you wish worked in a set?
Mathew Jonson's "Dayz." It's a classic, such an amazing track.

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
It's another one of my own tracks, actually! It's something I'm working on with Eelke Kleijn. It's very melodic and uplifting, the perfect track to end my sets. It will be released later this year.
