It was an international break for soccer this weekend (unless you're an MLS fan). The most interesting friendly matchup was Germany-England, which took place in Berlin. German got out to a 2-0 lead before England came back to win 3-2. Jamie Vardy's first England goal was a beaut.

Iker Casillas became the most capped European player of all time this weekend. Congrats, Iker. He made his 166th appearance for Spain.

Due to apparent financial concerns, Chad withdrew from qualification for the 2017 African Cup of Nations. The rulebook states that Chad's three qualification results to date will be annulled. The real loser here, besides Chad supporters, are the Nigerians. The team had a bad start to qualifying, and without Chad in the pool it will be difficult for the Nigerians to accumulate enough points to challenge group leaders Egypt.

A professor at Stirling University in Scotland has found more troubling links between the tiny rubber bits used in artificial turf around the world and cancer. Like everyone, I reacted to this news with visceral memories of spitting little pieces of rubber out of my mouth during every pickup game I've played over the last five years.

And now some sad news. A race motorcycle ran over Belgian cyclist Antoine Demoitié during a race this weekend. He was rushed to the hospital but later died of his injuries.

Novak Djokovic kept things rolling at the Miami Open with a clinical performance against Joao Sousa, whom he beat 6-4, 6-1.
