The former Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham boss Martin Jol has quit Egyptian side Al Ahly over fears for his personal safety, after receiving threats from fans on social media.

Jol took over the Cairo club during the final third of the 2015-16 season and guided them to the Egyptian Premier League title.

But the team have since faltered in the CAF Champions League, crashing out in the group stage. Jol was confronted by angry fans after a 2-2 draw with Zesco United of Zambia confirmed their exit from the tournament, which Al Ahly have won a record eight times.

The BBC reports that Jol has also received threats on social media and has now elected to end his spell at the club. An Al Ahly statement released on Thursday said the Dutchman "has told us he will not be able to complete his contract for personal reasons."

Jol was Spurs manager for almost three years between 2004 and 2007 and later spent two seasons in charge of fellow Londoners Fulham. The Dutchman's playing career included spells at West Brom and Coventry City.
