Young Capitals Fan Breaks down in Tears after Receiving a Penguins Hat for His Birthday

Cheer up, bud.

What happens when you buy a young kid apparel for a team he doesn't root for? A lot of tears.

Soon-to-be 5-year-old and Capitals fan Oliver was given a Penguins hat from his friend as an early birthday present, but for young kids, the whole 'it's the thought that counts' line of thinking rarely applies. Oliver didn't like it, to say the least.

Here's what his dad, Diller, had to say, courtesy Capitals blog Russian Machine Never Breaks.

My son, Oliver, turns five on December 18th, and celebrated his birthday at KCI on Saturday. Oliver is a passionate Caps fan like his old man. One of his little friends who was unable to attend the party, caught up with us yesterday and gave him his present. This kind friend knows Oliver loves hockey, and as we had recently found out, is a Pittsburgh native. As we got back into the car I handed my son the package and watched as he began to rip open the wrapper on the squishy package. As soon as he made the first rip, I saw gold wool sticking out of the package, and knew what was happening. Being a good father in the 21st century I grabbed my phone to record the inevitable reaction. As you watch the video, please bear in mind, this was in no way planned, cajoled or doctored. This is a 100 percent real fan reaction.

Anyway, I laughed and sympathized, promising him we would send a thank you note to his fried then exchange the hat for a Caps hat as soon as possible. I attempted to get him to put the hat on for a photo to send to his friend, but this was out of the question.
I thought you all might get a kick out of this genuine fan reaction. I guess this just shows how early on these teams can have a hold on our emotions. Hopefully the tears, will be tears of joy come June. LETS GO CAPS.
