Bjarne Melgaard’s Narcotics Anonymous-Inspired Streetwear Is His Ode to Addiction

It's every fashion obsessive's dream to dig into a favorite designer's closet and walk away with bags stuffed full of a fabulous new wardrobe—all while keeping their bank account intact. This past Tuesday (February 14), fans of Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard were able to do just that at Melgaard's Purge party, in which he gave away $500,000 worth of designer threads to the public as part of his ongoing project, The Casual Pleasure of Disappointment.

Included among the secondhand Comme Des Garçon, Jeremy Scott, and Lanvin were over 100 pieces from Melgaard's new eponymous streetwear collection, called MELGAARD. The artist says his line is inspired by Narcotics Anonymous, further describing it on the project website as "an all-black collection of threadbare T-shirts and bombers [that] give voice and cause to practicing drug users—against the trite reductionism, self-delusion and anti-emancipatory stupor of 12 step programs."
