Reports: Patrick Kane Subject of Police Investigation for...Something

According to reports out of his hometown of Hamburg, NY, Patrick Kane is being investigated for something. What that is, we don't know.

Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane is reportedly being investigated by police for some kind of incident (UPDATED below; it is a rape investigation) that occurred over the weekend in his off-season hometown of Hamburg, New York. The Buffalo News has two anonymous sources who claim that Hamburg police have instructed officers and detectives not to speak publicly about the matter.

"We can neither confirm nor deny the existence or nonexistence of a criminal investigation until such a time as a person is charged with a crime," said Hamburg Police Chief Gregory G. Wickett.
Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III used very similar language when asked about an investigation.
"We neither confirm nor deny the existence or nonexistence of an investigation until such time as someone has been charged with a crime," Sedita said.

Kane's attorney, Paul J. Cambria Jr.—who represented Kane when he was arrested for beating up a cab driver in Buffalo—added "I have nothing to say."

Despite customary practice to the contrary, Chief Wickett also declined to make the police blotter available to reporters for the weekend in question. Instead, Wickett invited the News to file a Freedom of Information Law request, and the newspaper filed two such requests looking for "complaints or reports filed with the department for a specific period of time and the other seeking any complaints or reports involving Kane for that same period of time." The police have 20 days to accept or reject the requests.

The News also went out to Kane's home, where they were rebuffed by an unidentified man at the door and told to leave the property. So…the police aren't saying anything, Kane's attorney isn't saying anything, and the Blackhawks and Kane's agent did not respond to requests for comment. It's not clear if Kane was home at the time reporters approached the house, but this all sounds like something happened. We'll just have to wait and see whether that something rises to the level of a crime for which he will be charged.

UPDATE: According to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News, the investigation is for rape.

The Patrick Kane investigation is a rape investigation.

The wording is a bit awkward, but we'll update as more information becomes available.

To be clear: Kane still is being investigated and no charges have been filed. Info in this and previous tweet from law-enforcement source.

However, there is a belief from multiple sources Kane might turn himself in as early as today.
