Dutch Man Accused of Sexually Harassing Amanda Todd Prior to Her Suicide Could Be Extradited to Canada

The Dutch man accused of harassing and blackmailing Port Coquitlam, BC teen Amanda Todd before she committed suicide in 2012 can be extradited to face charges in Canada, according to a new court ruling.

Aydin Coban, 38, has been charged with internet luring, extortion, criminal harassment, possession and distribution of child pornography, and extortion in relation to the Todd case. He is currently facing a separate case in the Netherlands, which includes 72 charges related to cyberbullying and child porn.

Todd committed suicide in October 2012 at the age of 15. At the time, she posted a YouTube video in which she held up cue cards explaining that a man had used a photo of her breasts taken from a webcam to extort and harass her. "He knew my address, school, relatives, friends, family names," she wrote. The video has since been viewed more than 19 million times.

Coban was arrested by Dutch authorities in January 2014 in connection with cyberbullying there as well as in the UK and Canada. The RCMP later charged him as part of the investigation into Todd's death. He has written a letter proclaiming his innocence.

Coban must stand trial in the Netherlands case before he could be extradited to Canada.
