Pressure Cooker Bomb Explodes in Bandung, Terrorist Dies in Shootout

It went off across the street from an elementary school.

An alleged terrorist died during a shoot out with West Java Police following a bomb attack on the Administrative Village of Arjuna, Bandung, West Java. He was shot in the stomach while holed up in the local  administrative office, he was carrying an ID on him with the name Yayat Cahdiyat, 42.

Boy Rafli Amar, National Police Spokesman, said the alleged terrorist died while being treated for his wounds at Bhayangkara Sartika Asih Hospital in Bandung. At about 9 this morning, a small blast from a pressure cooker bomb went off, according to police. The bomb was planted by a motorcyclist at Pandawa park, there were no victims. The perpetrator, carrying a knife and a gun, immediately fled the scene and hid on the second floor of the Administrative Office of Arjuna, police said.

It was reported that the perpetrator set a room on fire on the second floor and was involved in a shootout with the police. The alleged terrorist demanded the release of inmates captured by Indonesian Special Forces Anti-Terrorism Squad, Densus 88, police said.

One eye witness, Dono, claimed that the blast happened in Pandawa park across the street from Krisna Pandawa elementary school and appeared similar to a gas cylinder blast. "There are many gas resellers around here," Dono said.

West Java Police chief Anton Charliyan was quoted by a local media saying that the perpetrator was shot by police after he refused to surrender. "We found a gun and a backpack, but we can't confirm the details of the gun just yet," said Anton.

A Bomb Squad unit has been deployed to comb the area for other bombs and inspect the perpetrator's backpack. Anton says the terrorist is a part of an old terrorism network, even though no confirmation has been made.

University of Indonesia's terrorism expert, Ridlwan Habib, said the alleged terrorist is connected to a Bekasi terrorist network affiliated with Jamaah Anshar Daulah, led by Aman Abdurrahman.

"The perpetrator is an amateur, even the pressure cooker bomb was made by an amateur, "said Ridlwan. "However, the perpetrator didn't work alone, he must have had an accomplice."
