Hanging with SWIDT, the Conquerers

The Stoneyhunga rappers are kings of the streets.

This article is presented in partnership with Foot Locker and Nike.

This is the first in a four-part series of articles published in March exploring the connection between the kings of current street culture in New Zealand and the inspiration behind the latest drop of the Foot Locker exclusive Nike Air Max Plus ‘Le Requin’—translation: the Shark.

Current conquerors of everything, SWIDT are first to be featured. When we asked the hip-hop wordsmiths to express their thoughts on sharks in three key words, they came back with “razor-sharp”, “fierce” and “king”.

We gave this brief to Connor Pritchard, photographer, filmmaker and the guy behind a bunch of SWIDT's music videos including Little Did She Know, Close One and Tonight. Connor intentionally captured strong, bold lines and colours and hard light to bring to life the “razor sharp” effect. He used low angles to evoke “fierce” and “king” giving SWIDT power and authority within the frame. The group were styled and shot in poses reminiscent of early 90s hip hop imagery where stature, rebellion and dominance were essential.

Nike Air Max Plus 'Le Requin' is exclusive to Foot Locker.
