That Anti-SSM Christian Couple Aren't Getting Divorced After All

Sarah and Derek Jensen went viral back in 2015 after promising they'd separate in the event of Australia legalising same-sex marriage.

Remember that Christian couple who wrote an article in the Canberra City News about how they would divorce if Australia legalised same-sex marriage? Yeah, they’ve decided they’re not doing that anymore. Who could have foreseen this outcome?

“Our view is that marriage is a fundamental order of creation. Part of God’s intimate story for human history. Marriage is the union of a man and a woman before a community in the sight of God. And the marriage of any couple is important to God regardless of whether that couple recognises God’s involvement or authority in it.

“My wife and I, as a matter of conscience, refuse to recognise the government’s regulation of marriage if its definition includes the solemnisation of same sex couples,” Nick Jensen wrote in a 2015 op-ed.

Jensen said he and his wife Sarah believed that marriage equality would be a “move against the fundamental and foundational building block of Australian society and, indeed, human culture everywhere.” I’m not going to bother explaining the factual inaccuracies of this statement. Obviously marriage is not just a Christian institution. Many people of non-religious and religious backgrounds get married, in every country, on every day of the year. Although the Jensens said back in 2015 that they would still continue to live together after their stupid symbolic stunt divorce, they’ve now reneged on the whole plan. “My previous public comments regarding civil divorce never envisaged me separating from my wife, but rather our marriage from the state,” Jensen said in a statement to news.com.au yesterday. “The legislation currently makes it untenable for us to do this under the law…The point we were highlighting and that still stands however is the fact that a redefinition of marriage changes the agreement under which we were originally married.”

It’s really beautiful that two people with such a strange, stunted, niche view of the world managed to find each other, to be honest. We wish them and their marriage all the best.
