A Queensland man was stabbed in the back last week by a fellow pub patron, after the two men were kicked out of the pub for disorderly behaviour. He then returned to the premises with the knife still lodged in his flesh, police say.

A Queensland Police spokesperson told VICE that, according to their report of the incident, the stabbing victim was refused entry when he returned to the pub. However, staff then called the Queensland Ambulatory Service. When asked why the stabbing victim returned to the Beerwah Hotel, where he had been drinking earlier, the police spokesperson told VICE that this was not included in their report.

Rick Gazzard, owner of The Beerwah Hotel, disputes media accounts of the incident that state the man went back to drink another beer, writing on the venue's Facebook page: "…at 11.48pm the older male returned to the Hotel seeking assistance from staff and security because he had a knife in his back … The male did not enter the hotel with a knife stuck in his back to order one last beer as has been reported by the Sunshine Coast Daily!"

All in all, a deeply complex case.

A former version of this story quoted a Queensland Police "spokeswoman" as saying the patrons knew each other and had consumed "substantial" amounts of alcohol. The source of these quotes was unclear, hence their deletion.
