One Of The Best Documentaries Ever Made

The diary of a British thrash metal fan from 1992.

Professing a love for thrash metal is de rigeur for any city-dwelling young professional with an alcohol dependency and a Tumblr these days, but spare a thought for those suburban kids who fell in love with the genre in their teens back in the early 90s.

Nothing has better captured what it was really like to be a British thrash metal fan in 1992 than the classic, barely seen documentary In Bed With Chris Needham, which was part of the BBC’s pioneering “Video Nation” series.

I fully expect somebody to track down a clean copy of this and be showing it at film nights at bars for young fashionable people up and down the country within the next year. I don't know if they have those kinds of bars in Loughborough where this film was shot, but if they do, soon Chris Needham won't have to pay for a Tequila Sunrise in any of them ever again.

This doc is pretty good from the get-go but it only gets more amazing the more you watch it. Key scenes: the little brother cameos, the girlfriend, the gran, the emotional rants to the camera and the end scene promo video.

After you’ve watched it you should check out this recent-ish interview with him here. UPDATE: Chris is still making music!
