Last weekend, more than 180,000 fans, nerds and oh-so patient lay people flocked to San Diego for Comic-Con International 2015. For those of you who don’t know—or don’t yet understand the power of fandom—Comic-Con is nerd mecca. It’s a place where we can dress in cosplay, camp out for days in the Hall H line just to catch special glimpses of films to come, and walk the dealer’s room floor in search of that precious collectible. It has long been a place of more than just comic books—it’s a total, interactive, exclusive experience for fans. It's total fandemonium.
I’m a proud ladynerd and fangirl. So, internet, here are the five Con-exclusive trailers/footage that I’m most excited to throw my fandom—and my cash—at. In no particular order (that’s a lie, the last one is definitely my favorite):
A classic tale of hero pitted against hero. I groaned when I heard Ben Affleck was going to be Batman, and I’ve avoided gratuitous slow-mo abuser Zack Snyder entirely. But after watching this badassery, I’m changing my tune. “The red capes are coming,” friends… (Release date: March 25, 2016)
Suicide Squad has some of our favorite DC Comics baddies—Deadshot, The Joker, and (swoon) Harley Quinn—as, well, heroes. In what reality? I’m not yet sure. But I’m with the film the second Viola Davis gives me an indication of how terrible they are: “Let’s just say I put them in a hole—and threw away the hole.” (Release date: August 5, 2016)
Okay, so this trailer wasn’t quite exclusive, but its presence at the "Bold Voice of Contemporary Horror" panel (introduced by Con legend Elijah Wood) was! I love the comedic horror subgenre (Shaun of the Dead is effing genius), so Cooties looks like a good time. Plus, we get to see stars of LotR, The Office, 30 Rock, Lost, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in a movie together? Done. (Release date: September 18, 2015)
I cannot tell you how much joy this Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion project brings me. Like everyone I know, I was distraught when Fox cancelled Joss Whedon’s Firefly. So, in this crowdfunded webseries, Firefly fans get to see more from their favorite space cowboys in this tongue-in-cheek series, Con Man. Bonus points for every geek icon you spot in the trailer! (Release date: September 30, 2015)
This panel was the coup de grâce of my geeky undoing. I cried. I wept like a little baby throughout this whole panel. Director J.J. Abrams brought us the most touching and carefully curated behind-the-scenes look at Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens, followed by a discussion with key cast members (including legends Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher!) and then finished with a surprise concert for all 6,500+ Hall H fans. This was truly an epic moment for the franchise—and the fans. Watch the footage, and prepare to weep. (Release date: December 15, 2015)
