Modeselektor's Animated 2D Cardboard Miniverse

The Echo Award-winning electro duo stack another zany animation onto the pile.

The stories behind artist collaborations are fraught with fleeting opportune moments. Reaching out at just the right time means everything. Swiss director François Chalet just wanted Modeselektor to DJ his wedding and thought, what the hell, it doesn’t hurt to ask. Before he knew it, he was creating a cardboard miniverse for their song with Miss Platnum, “Berlin.”

Here’s Chalet’s (unedited) account of the serendipity:

We want to get married, and we want Modeselektor to play there … They'll NEVER come and play at a wedding … And we wouldn't be able to afford them … Weeks later I emailed Monkeytown Records in order to prove to Meike, my future wife, that this idea will always stay an idea … One day later at the phone – Monkeytown: "You contacted us at the perfect moment – we urgently need a good video because someone flaked on us!" One Skype conversation with Modeselektor … 3 weeks of hard work and little sleep … cardboard everywhere … lots of computer crashes and … Modeselektor will play at our wedding – hurray!

Modeselektor just won the ECHO Award for their 2011 album Monkeytown (which also happens to be the name of their record label), and they’re building a body of adventurous music videos—first for “Shipwreck” featuring Thom Yorke, then for “Evil Twin,” their collaboration with Miami master of insanity Otto von Schirach, and most recently for “Berlin.”

Looks like things at Monkeytown are on the up and up, and we can’t wait to see the next bit of visual madness from our favorite techno Berliners.
