My 2013: Falty DL

My 2013: artists from around the world tell us about a year in music

It's taken me three drafts and a week to write this.  I would rant for 300 words and then edit it's soul out.

There is a lot I am happy about in music - younger and younger talented musicians, producers and singers.  Great new labels.  Great old labels. I was productive as hell this year, and so were most of my friends.  People who were making 12"s when i started have signed multi album deals with good record labels.  Interesting rappers being produced by interesting producers.  Hell, 2013 was big for that.

What I didn't like, or what I was constantly editing out for fear of sounding grumpy or ungrateful was unfortunately the bulk of my writing.  I hated a lot of the best new music.  I hated a lot of the nominees. I can't stand settling for the dance music that does cross over into the greater audience.  I am underground.  I fucking love underground music.  I also had my album artwork in every apple store around the world this year for about 4 months. So fuck me.  But fuck you too, for liking the shit that was actually produced in a room by a 38 year old veteran producer for a bunch of kids.  Watch them fumble to plug in their gear.

In the neatly groomed look of the child star crap electronic music, remember that it really is a bunch of suits in a room deciding how to shape popular culture.  It's not the kids themselves.  In fact whats worse, is its kids of those suites who are doing this.  The spawn of the freaking devil, man.

The world is very different now.  It's the Wild West yet again in the Music Industry.  Enormous companies are sinking and swimming trying to monetize the degrading industries lack of material tender. The saving grace, the independent market, is failing as well.  Maybe not always failing monetarily speaking, but it's being a pussy none the less. The glimmering hope provided by a young rapper, rapping about something completely new and groundbreaking in Rap, is quickly defused by old Rap mentality of jealousy and money.

I was on the phone with my cable compony last night. Nico, my costumer care guy, loves digital reggae he said. I sent him some digital reggae this morning. He was super happy. More connections between people in 2014.  Less remote dj sets from the comfort of your masturbation station.  Less streaming, more making. Make, make, make! "I am a creator damn it!"

Imagine a sentence here that is really good.

Just don't settle for the mediocrity.  For the bass drop.  I'm not sure this will appear as I originally typed it.  It doesn't really matter.  I have a remix past due anyway.  This message and this publication will self destruct in 3 months.

Love, Drew
