Mitt Romney to Fight Evander Holyfield (Yes, That Mitt Romney)

Mitt Romney (68-year-old politician) is going to fight Evander Holyfield (16 years younger and a boxer).

You may remember Mitt Romney as the man Barack Obama defeated to secure his second term as U.S President in 2012. And you may very well remember Evander Holyfield as a world heavyweight boxing champion, a bona fide legend too often remembered as "the guy whose ear Tyson bit off." But you are unlikely to have ever connected the two.

That is about to change. Because Romney is set to get into the ring with Holyfield in a bout VICE Sports is dubbing "utterly batshit weird".

Mitt Romney is 68 years old. And he's Mitt Romney.

But that has not deterred him. As reported by our colleague at FIGHTLAND, the defeated presidential candidate and former governor of Massachusetts will face pugilistic legend Holyfield in what seems like an episode of Celebrity Deathmatch.

It's important to note that the bout will be for charity; Romney will be wearing full protective gear, so things will surely stay "white-collar." However, it is still no small feat for a 68-year-old politician to step into the ring with a talented (albeit 52-year-old) boxer who will presumably have to punch him at least a bit. Otherwise it'll just look stupid.

Romney has said that he prefers a boxing match as a fundraiser because it will be a lot "better to provide this kind of entertainment rather than just have dinner and listen to speakers." Which we can definitely get on board with.

The first promotional video appeared online this week, and it's incredible. Romney opens by stating, "Critics say I'm out of touch, that I'm stiff, that I just don't relate to people. For years I've been listening to garbage like that, and I decided to fight back. How do you do that? By taking on the former heavyweight champion of the world."

It's way too fun and bizarre to not get behind this. The fight takes place on May 15th and will benefit CharityVision, a Utah-based organization dedicated to helping doctors in developing nations perform surgeries on people who suffer from curable blindness. Which, whether you like Mitt Romeny or not, is a very worthy cause.
