If there's one lesson to be gleaned from the last century-or-so of competitive sporting, it's that victory is typically measured in Champagne showers and Gatorade baths.
But not for Danielle Kang. In fact, the 24-year-old pro golfer wants the world to know that the true reward of success is pho—lots and lots of pho.
After winning the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois last week, the California-born golfer decided that the only sensible way to commemorate the first major championship win in her young career was to use her newly-gained championship trophy as a giant bowl—and to eat pho from it.
And so she did.
In an interview with Barstool Sports' Fore Play podcast, Kang revealed that following her win, she and fellow pro-golfer Michelle Wie actually took the trophy—before she was allowed to—and brought it out with them for a night of celebration. "Me and Michelle stole the trophy. 'Cause we weren't supposed to take it, so we ran off with it." Kang stated that the event organisers informed her that they would be shipping the trophy to her at a later date, but that she wanted to spend time with it on the night of her win.
The day after Kang's win, the champion's brother, Alex Kang, decided to post a photo on Instagram of the golfer standing over her trophy—and eating a bowl of pho from it like the visionary she undoubtedly is.
When asked what she did with the trophy, Kang told Barstool Sports that she "Got some Asian crap going on, ate some noodles out of it. There's nothing open that late at night so we gotta go get some noodles." The golfer added, "I had my caddies drink beer out of it, I ate noodles out of that thing, and then we had to return it."
Turns out, victory tastes a hell of a lot like Vietnamese noodle soup.
