Heinz Considering Rebrand of Salad Cream to ‘Sandwich Cream’

Literally no one puts it on salad.

There it is, your beautiful salad. You carefully constructed it using all the best bits: cucumber, lamb’s lettuce, halloumi, a cherry tomato or two. You go to add the finishing touch, the final ingredient to crown this tasty yet filling dish. Out of the fridge, you pull a bottle of salad cream and proceed to bathe—nay, shower—the salad in mayonnaise-y goo. Your housemate recoils. Who the fuck does that?

Indeed, this seems to be the nation’s general reaction to using salad cream on, er, salad and Heinz has noticed. After finding out that only 14 percent of consumers actually put the vinegary mayonnaise dressing on their salad, the brand is considering renaming the condiment “sandwich cream”—two words that definitely don’t evoke images of white bread mushed together into a barely edible paste. Yum!

According to the BBC, a Heinz spokesperson told trade magazine The Grocer that the company was thinking about a salad cream rebrand—the first major change to the condiment since its launch 104 years ago—to make the name more accurate. “We are reviewing the brand’s name to reflect how the product is enjoyed by consumers every day, and with the majority usage currently with sandwiches,” the company told The Grocer. “There are consumers now who haven’t grown up with the brand in the household and just don’t know about the iconic zingy flavour, or what to eat it with.”

“We can confirm that ‘sandwich cream’ is one of the names being considered,” it continued. Mmmm, cream of sandwich.

The decision on the salad cream name change will be confirmed in September. Ambiguous Condiment That’s Not Quite Mayo Cream, maybe?
