After picking up Marvel in 2009, it seemed that Disney had a near monopoly on nostalgic fantasy, but it seems they were still hungry for more. Now the 90-year-old company is cementing their stakehold on ALL our favorite childhood memories with the acquisition of Lucasfilm, along with all its properties, including its leading visual effects arm Industrial Light & Magic and the epically loved Star Wars franchise.Today’s announcement was accompanied by news of a brand new Star Wars trilogy to begin in 2015 with episode seven, chronologically following 1983’s Return of the Jedi. The new series will have to hurdle skepticism and dissatisfaction that still lingers from the ill-received prequel trilogy that launched in 1995. And who knows what die-hard fans will think of Disney’s creative hand entering the mix? But George Lucas spoke well of the move, stating, “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”Either way, creative collaborations between two powerhouses of modern fantasy will undoubtedly produce something mind-blowing, and we’re excited to see where this partnership will go—just as long as it doesn’t result in a Jedi training school sitcom on ABC Family.@ImYourKid
