teamLab, the Japanese artists' collective and creators behind digital space waterfalls, some interactive crystalline fireworks, and a projection-mapped fishing experience, debuted a new installation on Friday called Flowers and People – Gold and Dark.

Part of the Japan Society's new media exhibition, Garden of Unearthly Delights: Works by Ikeda, Tenmyouya & teamLabteamLab's installation consists of the familiar flowers from touchstone projects Ever Blossoming Life - Gold, Ever Blossoming Life - Dark, and Life Survives by the Power of Life, but frames them within a room-sized projection of similarly blooming digi-plantlife. Upon entering the room, viewers are blanketed in digital vines and flowers, becoming an interactive part of the garden—the 'people' to the titular flowers. An algorithm controls the blooming, withering, and leisurely route the plants take in their short, digital journey across the room's walls.

As viewers get closer and further from the walls, sensors pick up their movements, prompting the flowers to bloom and wilt accordingly. The result is a completely unique experience for every attendee: "Within the art work, the flowers are first born, they then grow, bud, and bloom; and before long, they scatter, wither, and fade away," writes teamLab. "The interaction between the viewer and the installation causes continuous change to the artwork and previous visual states can never be replicated, and will never reoccur." With each person's actions deciding the life and death of the world around them, every experience in Flowers and People – Gold and Dark becomes an inextricable part of the digital garden.
