Japan Is Really into This New Coca-Cola That Makes You Poop

Nothing like a drink that comes with the added promise of a danger poo.

Japan is known for doing weird shit with food. Whether it’s trialling a fried chicken that doesn’t smell like fried chicken, putting Nick Cage’s face on snacks, or adding mayo into your pancake mix (why tho), the country has a seemingly boundless appetite for unusual food and drink.

It comes as no surprise, then, that a new Coke that makes you poop is doing quite well with Japanese customers.

Coca-Cola might not be something you’d associate with #NewYearNewYou, or, er, pooping, but its new beverage, Coca-Cola Plus, is hoping to crack Japan’s health market—by helping with bowel movements. First launched in Japan in March 2017, the drink has been given a gold-standard rating from the Foods for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU), part of a $6 billion (£4.4 billion) healthy drinks industry.

As reported in the Wall Street Journal, Coca-Cola Plus helps aid digestion because it contains five grams of dextrin per bottle, a type of high-fibre carbohydrate. And making you poop isn’t its only benefit. According to a press release from Coca-Cola, the drink also helps “suppress fat absorption and moderate the levels of triglycerides in the blood after eating.” And, if we weren’t perfectly clear before, it makes you poop.

Suddenly the mayo pancakes don't seem so bad, after all.
